How much does CDL school cost?
By Jake R · Updated October 23, 2026 · National framing only; dollar tables cited below are Florida-sourced.
There is no single national “average” CDL school price we can invent honestly. Tuition varies by class (A vs B), public vs private provider, what’s bundled (permit fees, skills-test truck, retests, lodging), and whether WIOA or the GI Bill® helps. Use this page for what to ask; use our Florida CDL school cost page when you need real, sourced dollar tables.
What a quote usually includes — and what it often leaves out
Ask for a written, itemized quote. Typical line items:
- Often in the headline price: classroom or online theory, range and road (behind-the-wheel) instruction, use of school trucks during training.
- Often extra or separate: commercial learner’s permit (CLP) fees, skills-test and knowledge-test fees, medical exam / DOT physical, drug screen, books or online theory access codes, lodging if the school is residential, retest fees if you need another attempt.
- Worth confirming in writing: whether the school provides a truck for the state skills test, how many behind-the-wheel hours or proficiency checks you get, and the refund policy if you quit or the location’s registry status changes.
Class A vs Class B
Class A programs (combination vehicles) are usually longer and more expensive than Class B at the same school. That pattern shows up clearly in official Florida CareerSource and school records on our Florida cost page — we cite those Florida figures only; we do not invent a national Class A or Class B average.
Why quotes vary so much
- Public technical / community colleges often publish lower sticker prices than private truck schools; waitlists and fixed start dates are common.
- Private schools may advertise shorter calendars and higher all-in prices; compare what’s included, not the marketing headline.
- Theory vs behind-the-wheel split: federal rules allow theory from one TPR-listed provider and BTW from another, but range and public-road BTW must come from the same provider (49 CFR 380.707(c)). Bundled vs split packages change the total. See ELDT theory training explained.
- No federal minimum hours: ELDT behind-the-wheel training is proficiency-based; the curriculum sets no minimum instruction hours (49 CFR Part 380, Appendix A). That is one reason schools can quote very different lengths and prices for the “same” Class A path. Details: How long does CDL school take?
Florida dollar tables (sourced)
For concrete numbers, use CDL school cost in Florida (2026). Those figures come from school pages and CareerSource Eligible Training Provider / ITA records — not from a national survey. When you see a dollar amount on this site, assume it is Florida-sourced unless another official source is named on that page.
Funding paths (no invented award amounts)
- WIOA: local workforce boards can fund eligible training through Individual Training Accounts. In Florida we map WIOA-eligible CDL programs on GI Bill & WIOA CDL schools in Florida. Ask your local American Job Center; award amounts vary by board and are not listed as national averages here.
- GI Bill®: some CDL programs appear in VA’s GI Bill Comparison Tool. Start with CDL training for veterans and confirm the facility on VA.gov. We do not invent housing or tuition award dollars.
Before you pay

- Check for an under-review notice or a prior removal: what removed vs under review means.
- Get the itemized quote and refund policy in writing.
