Private vs public CDL school enrollment

By Jake R · Updated October 27, 2026 · Based on FMCSA Training Provider Registry enrollment fields and how this site displays them.

On the registry, many training locations are marked for private enrollment only. Others are open to the public. That label is about who the provider says it will enroll — not about quality, price, or whether the location is “FMCSA approved” in some special way. Both kinds can appear as Active on the registry.

What the labels mean here

We show that wording on school and hub pages so you do not waste time chasing a campus that will not take outside students.

Why private-only pages are often noindex

Active private-only detail pages on this site are generally marked noindex. The goal is simple: search results should surface locations a typical student can enroll in, not closed company yards. Private-only locations can still appear in tables (often collapsed) on state and city hubs when they sit in that geography. That is a display choice for this directory — not an FMCSA rule.

What a student should ask

  1. Confirm the exact training location (not just the company name) is Active on the official TPR and on our school checker.
  2. Ask in writing: Do you enroll students who are not employees (or not part of a closed partner program)?
  3. If they say yes but our page still shows private enrollment only, ask them to check their TPR registration — the public flag can lag or be wrong on either side.
  4. Still check for an under-review notice or a prior removal: removed vs under review.
